Another update: 

I did: 
boot a rescue CD 
# chroot /mnt/sysimage 
# grub-install /dev/sda 


This seems to allow the machine to boot.  Now I'm going to make that 
bootable USB stick by booting into a Knoppix disk and making sure I'm 
not mounting the local drive.  Maybe I should physically take the drive 
out of the laptop...
