Which reminds me -- there is at least one fast graphical file
manager. rox-filer is quite speedy. 

http://roscidus.com/desktop/  -- you don't need to adopt any
other part of the Rox desktop, or the ZeroInstall system.
rox-filer uses gtk2 libraries, so nothing special.
