any suggestion for web server load balancing appliances

If you aren't going multi-datacenter, the 1U box of your choice
running Linux and Pound  ( http://www.apsis.ch/pound/ ) will do
pretty much everything you need.

Other free alternatives: ldirectord, nginx, HAproxy.
