Another couple of thoughts.
Windows, Macintosh, and iPhone are corporate focused projects. They all
are market driven.

Community developed products are not necessarily market driven.

That said, I also agree with you on proprietary drivers. Video companies
are very protective of their technology and have the opinion that by
releasing open source drivers they would be compromising their
technology. It's been a big debate for a long time. The purist community
on one had does not want closed source drivers period.=20
