I think that there is much truth in that.  I myself am uncomfortable in company sponsored social gatherings.  Always have been.  It's not autism spectrum.  It just... well, it is.  I do like having others available for bouncing around ideas but when it comes to getting the work done then please leave me in peace.  This is likely a factor in why I went the path of the system administrator rather than programmer.
