No-cost web hosting for home business

That's great until you have to get your data back out. I recently had
to move a client from Google Sites to a more traditional server
environment. It wasn't that hard for me because I've been a Unix
developer for decades, and I'm pretty proficient with Emacs. So I spent
some quality time with the 'wget' man-page to pick just the right
arguments to 'wget'. Then I created an Emacs macro to edit out all the
non-content areas of each file 'wget' had fetched -- i.e. remove the
header, footer, menus, etc. Having done that, I created a template with
a single copy of the header, footer, menus, etc. and included that in
every webpage so I can make my changes in a single place and affect the
header, footer, and menus of every page on the website.

If you're convinced you'll never need to move away from Google Sites,
then it's probably a fine solution for what you're doing. But if you
might ever need to grow beyond Google Sites, you'll need to be pretty
familiar with tools like 'wget' and some powerful editor. Or you'll
need to find somebody who is.
