What are you trying to accomplish?

The only thing I typically use apt-cache for is "apt-cache policy
package" to see what versions are available when a package can be
obtained from multiple repositories, or to confirm /etc/apt/preferences
settings.

aptitude show package

should tell you the version of the package you have installed, or the
current version that will be installed.
