The SCO vs. IBM took a very long time because there were an awful lot of
documents, experts, and other things, and eventually got stayed by SCO's
bankruptcy filing. The SCO vs. Novell was much faster, but then it got
stayed. One of SCO's tactics was to bully Linux users into paying for
licenses. One of their big mistakes was not charging for the comedy value.

But, there was real risk to Linux during this period. Courts are very
unpredictable. Had SCO prevailed, there would have been a very different
picture.
