Think about using a generic computer and openindiana.  Or FreeNAS.  I don't
know what you mean when you say FreeNAS isn't the form factor you want...
You mean you want an embedded device that doesn't run a normal OS?  If
that's the case, you'll have to get something custom like a drobo or
whatever.
