[Discuss] can one safely login multiple times to the same user on a modern Linux desktop?

Going to a meeting (and even going to the bathroom) can result in not
coming back to one's current login location before
the end of the work day.   I realize that dedicated workstations are now
the norm, but there was a time when it was considered cutting edge to allow
people to login using whatever equipment happened to be in front of them.
And it was even possible to do so without worrying about having logged off
elsewhere or who knows what possible account corruption.  We've partially
papered over the loss of that functionality by issuing people laptops, but
it is not the same.
