google almost seems "too big to fail" [with all the problems that  
classification entails]

chrome was cool- but it never had the open source "sheen" that i look for  
... [i realize this is a completely idiosyncratic criteria]

i'd encourage you to think about opera- much lighter. doesn't always  
display as designers intend [due to bad source HTML usually], but it works  
pretty well for me [maybe it's because of the simplistic sites i visit,  
but that's another matter].
