I was using 1.2.1 but ftp'd the 1.2.11 kernel and made that one.

BTW, I tried to build a 1.3.4 kernel but had a reference error in the
making with ppp.o . Anyone else experience that one? I will try
   .....

The ppp.o problem was identified on the kernel mail list. Just
getting the next version was the right thing to do.

As for what kernel version you should be running, you may not want to
run one of the 1.3 series kernels. The even number series are for
production use, they're stable. The odd number series are
experimental and may well cause pain.
(I really liked Dale Worley's sig)

Patches to the 1.2 series are all for bug fixes and make it run
better. Changes to 1.3 could be for any new feature or experiment and
you milage may vary wildly. I weren't forced into running 1.3 because
of a project to add a new feature, I would definately be running the
newest 1.2 kernel.
