Tape backup on fd and tar

Folks,

here's a [probably simple] question that the reseller [not surprisingly]
couldn't answer:

I'm interested in buying a Coloroado Jumbo 1400 Internal backup tape drive
for my P90 with Linux 1.2.1 (the drive costs $169 from GLOBAL, and stores
up to 1.36GB of data, compressed). According to the listing in the catalog,
the drive "connects to your existing floppy controller - even if you already
have two floppy drives installed". Well, I have one 3.5" drive and an IDE
hard drive (I also have a SCSI controller/drive, but these backup units are
considerably more expensive...) My question is, if I hook up this bargain
drive to my floppy controller, can I still use Unix-type backup utils such
as "tar"? I can't see any reason why not, but I figured I'd ask the
list before ordering (*gasp*) mail order.

Thanks,
Eric Hansen
