self-extractor?

This message is a shot from the hip since I don't have time to check
it out myself.

The first thing in Linux land that I know of is the kernel.  I'm
thinking of the auto uncompress code.  

Also, Bruce Perens, of the Debian project, wrote some library code for
tar extraction that could be linked into an executable.  It's used used
in the dpkg program.

Take a look in

   does anyone know of a self-extracting tool for the Unix world?  I want to
   create an executable that does the same sort of thing as self-extracing ZIP
   or ARJ archives do in the PC world.
   
   I want something that is distribution-neutral...
