Check that you have these:

   $ ls -l /dev/par*
   crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   0 Jul 17  1994 /dev/par0
   crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   1 Jul 17  1994 /dev/par1
   crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   2 Jul 17  1994 /dev/par2

Check your boot messages, to see whether the lp device started OK.
(Use shift-pgup if it has scrolled off the screen, or else
"dmesg >foobar; less foobar".)

I think lp should also appear in /proc/devices.
