More Processes

A linux application can only create 240 processes and claims that it
needs to be able to create 320 processes. How do I increase this limit?

On Solaris 5.6, there is a ulimit command. Is there something similar
for Linux? Do I need to recompile the kernel?

Why do I ask this question? Because I am trying to install a "real"
application on my linux box at home so I can get more development time
than I do at work. At work, we have a Sun E4500 SMP "production
machine" with 8 CPUs, 4.5 GB RAM and 2.5 TB of disk array. There is no
"development machine".

I'm hoping to purchase a 4-processor linux box with 512 MB RAM and a few
GB of SCSI disk space. However, since I'll be spending my money, I'd
like to work out the operating system issues on my Pentium uniprocessor
machine first.
