Actually, CDs have a great deal of redundant data for fault tolerance. 
However, it was originally assumed that they would be storing Red Book audio,
not computer data.  Even with computer data, about 20% of the raw data is there
only to provide error correction, about 2.5 KB for each 2.0 KB sector.
