followup from nite with SAMBA

I struggled with getting my eth0 configured in Red Hat Linux 5.1 for about
2 weeks.  After trying the NIC card in my PC I found it was a faulty nic
card.  Then I got another card (Lyncsys LNE2000T NE2000 compatible) and ran
linuxconf and the  network configuration part to set up nic card and it
still didn't work.  Then I discovered that you have to disable plug and
play, which I did by running the setup program for the card in DOS.  Then I
booted back to Linux and the card was detected.  After that I ran ifconfig
eth0 [hostname or ip] to assign the nic card an IP (if you use a hosts name
make sure you have that hosts associated to an IP in /etc/hosts (you
probably knew that :)).    A bit of a hack from a newbie but it worked for
me.  Now it works like a charm.    Read the ethernetHOWTO to see if your
nic card is compatible with Linux.  Good luck.  

Samba is my next project to set up - anything I should know before I start.
