Althought your comment is correct in the context of the Intel EtherExpress Pro
which was the subject of the posting, it is not generally true of all Ethernet
cards any longer.  In particular, firmware-dependent cards such as those based
upon the DEC Tulip chipset (2104x) will NOT light their LEDs until and unless
their firmware has been loaded successfully after power-on; prior to firmware
load, they are just paperweights.
