The issue with one way cable modems is where the cable tv operator's cable plant is not capable of two way service. When most cable tv plants were built, the thinking was that noone would ever do two way communications. There was also an economic side where one way was cheaper. Same thinking that 640K would be more memory than anyone would ever want. This is also the way that sattelite and microwave systems work. For home based personal systems it works out. It provides a way for the cable operator to offer the service before spending the bucks to upgrade the entire network.
