Linux upgrade

In order to use the 2.2 kernel on a four-year-old system, you'd have to
upgrade almost everything: gcc, binutils, ld, various libraries, etc.
So much has changed that I wouldn't know where to begin. As far as I know,
Yggdrasil hasn't been maintained in years.

If it were my machine, I'd start with a new distribution. I've been using
Redhat the past couple of years, and I'd say it's an excellent choice.
Others in our group favor Debian, which they tell me is another excellent
choice.
