Freekin .rhkmvtag

Well,

I just got shafted by .rhkmvtag ...

I'm busy trying to build a custom kernel (to activate video 4 linux)
I'm building...
I'm compiling...
I'm installing...
I'm running depmod -a to build a new kernel dependency file...
I'm rebooting...
COUGH!

no dependencies for ne.o (my netowrk adapter)

I spent hours trying to track down why this wasn't working, and
low and behold, have a look at /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. It searches
for a file .rhkmvtag and builds a link /lib/modules/preferred which
later blows many of the system default behaviours. Anyway, I moved the
tag file and then removed /lib/modules/preferred and reran depmod and
now all is well. These little customizations RedHat is plopping in
need to get documented somewhere. Is there a logical reason for
/lib/modules/preferred?
