Interesting reading. The new docsis-compatible modems have lot of features:

- 56-bit DES encryption of data streams. This is a good thing for privacy,
  and it seems to be a *required* portion of the standard. 

- The modems are required to be have upgradable firmware to enable the
  standard to evolve.

- There are a bunch of quality-of-service features, including very
  flexible packet filtering. The obvious use will be to make it *impossible*
  to run a server without paying for it. Hmmm...
