Actually, if I'm reading their material right, their X server
only buys performance when you're running VMware in full-screen
mode.  If it's running in a window, there's no difference.  I
did install the VMware display driver inside the NT guest OS;
it made a _tremendous_ difference (both in performance and
resolution...)

I installed NT as a guest OS along with service pack 3 a couple
months ago.  I just got the SP4 CD over the weekend and and it
installed without a hitch.  I am amazed at what VMware has
been able to accomplish!
