This is my interpretation of the following information from the Red Hat Linux
Secrets book: 

"Linux supports any hard drive your PC's Basic Input and Output Sustem (BIOS)
supports. In many older 386 and 486 PC's you had to use a separate driver to
access large hard drives- the system BIOS could not handle these drives. You
can't install Linux on such systems."
