Boy, this really peeks my curiosity now!!  We use these little HP units in
our product, and I've always been able to take tapes between sites and read
them without difficulty over the last couple of years.

So, 

1.  What model tape drive have you been using?

2.  How long is it before the tape heads become mis-aligned?
