I will start by answering him.
There are several good distributions of Linux. Mandrake 7.0, Red Hat 6.2,
and SuSE 6.4 are al reasonably good and complete versions of Linux, and all
contain the gcc C compiler and G++ C++ compiler. Editors and debuggers are
also contained. All of the above are easy to install. The LILO boot manager
is capable of booting DOS. I would also get a good book on C and C++ as
well as Linux. Harvey Deitel's books are excellent as are Lar Kaufmann's
Linux and Windows can live on the same system if you have enough disk
space. You don't need Borland of Microsoft to learn C or C++. The compiler
on Windows are visually oriented, which makedeveloping programs easy, but
they are not good for learning the language.

I am currently reading a beginning UNIX book, and a beginning LINUX book.
I
will start a class next month on C and UNIX. I like to however start
teaching
by self . I would like to buy a UNIX and LINUX operation system for my home
PC. using system command as by re-booting software. By the end of this year
my goal is to know c/c++ on unix and linux. I have oracel 8.4 currenly on
my
PC and thinking about buying borland 5.0 c++ because of the oracle 8.4
link.
some people have said that I should buy micorsoft c++ 6.0 . what do you
think?

thank you
john nenninger
