You do not need to use ftp. You can use rz/sz, which send/receive files 
using standard input/output. These were developed initially for use with 
PC DOS based terminal applications. 

But, if you are going to get a file from a remote host and the ftp port is 
open, ftp should work also, although your firewall could block it. 

You also might need to put your ftp into passive mode.
