Backspace key for pine/emacs

There are numerous ways to fix your problem.  The easiest is probably to
map your backspace key to delete.  Some programs seem to have that
hard-coded in as their erase character (like ftp).  Then, to tell pine
to use delete instead of ^h add this line to your .profile or .bashrc (or
wherever you put your start-up customizations):

  stty erase '^?'

After that, your problem should go away.  See the keyboard howto for
details of how to remap your keys.  The howto's are all located at
