It is for this reason that many distributions create /opt as a symlink
to /usr/local.  I do the same if opt doesn't exist when I install a box,
for the purpose of evading the limited space on / and any confusion
caused by installing into a non-existent /opt.  This will depend on the
existing partitions, of course.
