First, C is a procedural language in contrast to C++ and Java which are
object oriented languiages. There are plenty of jobs for C, C++ and Java
programmers. The primary C and C++ compilers on Linux is gcc and
g++ respectively. KDevelop is an IDE similar to Visual C++. All 3
languages have a degree of portability depending on how close you stay
to the standards. While I have a degree in Computer Science, I learned C
and C++ from books and from working in the industry. Sometimes it is
easier to learn a language by taking a course. The jury is still out on
Java. I personally think that Java may be the language of the future, but
right now, if you want to get the job done, C or C++ is the right tool.
