time sync on Linux

Greetings,

being from the NTP school of system time synchronization, what is
the advantage of "timed" which RedHat likes to install by default.

Is one better/worse than the other?  Features?  From what I gather,
timed has an election system built in if the current time authority
fails.  Is that it?

My current scenario is to sync my household server with NTP, and
now I'm trying to determine if I should use ntp or timed for the
workstations...

comments?

I'll be installing a GPS stratum-1 time source at home before long ;-)
