Debian Box

VAResearch is bundling Debian GNU Linux 2.1 with the
O'Reilly book "Learning Debian/GNU Linux". I got my copy at
Frys for $20, which I figure is a fair price for an O'Reilly
book, plus a quick install brochure, plus the Debian 2.1
CDROM. I haven't tried this yet myself, but it looks
promising.

I suggest you first peruse the book to determine if this
combination looks helpful to you.

Debian is considered harder to install than many others,
particularly Mandrake, Turbo, Caldera, Suse, but Debian is
also considered to be the best by many.
