No, not necessarily.  If you want to boot from it, yes, but that is a BIOS
issue under any operating system.  Otherwise, it can be specified with
parameters to the boot prompt.  The standard Linux IDE driver supports
four channels, ide0-3, but you need to specify address and IRQ explicitly.
