You can only use '~.' (or any '~' function) at the start of a line
(i.e., just after a newline).  If you're typed anything OTHER than a
newline, then SSH won't escape the ~-function.  TO make sure it ALWAYS
works, you need to type:
	<RET> ~ <fcn>

FWIW, 'rlogin' behaves exactly the same.
