Tape-caused hang (was IPChains question (SOLVED))

You hung the SCSI bus.  This, in turn, probably hung the swapper, which
meant that the operating system was wedged.  By turning off the tape, you
released the SCSI bus and swapping restarted.

Since DDS-4 is nearly always LVD, I would suspect cabling or termination.  
See if there is anything if the log about a bus reset.

Also, if your SCSI controller uses an Adaptec chipset, you need to upgrade
the kernel and use the 5.1.29 version of the aic7xxx driver.
