what's a better code design priciple?

Hackers and SQL?  Oh well.  If you're using an industrial strength
database like Oracle or DB/2 I'd be inclined to hand it to the
database and let the query optimizer sort it out.

Warning: I'm only qualified to play a db programmer on TV.
