How do I test for directory contents size?

OK, it's Monday:  this must be in the Nutshell book *somewhere*, but I
can't find it.

How do I test to find out if the contents of a given directory will fit
onto a given file system?

In other words, if I'm transferring a RedHat 6.2 CD onto a drive, what
do I do to find out what will fit and what will not?
