Since I read this a few days ago, I've tried it on an  assortment  of
linux  boxes.  I was unable to discover any cases in which it had any
effect on the color at all. In most cases, it was simply ignored.  In
a  few cases, a few windows such as xterm bleeped at me in complaint.
But never any visible change in what was on the screen.

It does sound like something that could  be  useful  in  the  ongoing
puzzle  of how to make things on the screen more readable despite the
fervent efforts of all sorts of  software  (even  ls  ;-)  to  choose
colors with minimal contrast.

So how does it work?
