Why would multiple copies of sendmail freak you out.
There a numerous ways mail gets generated on your box. For one, a script
in your crontab could do it.

What flavor and version of Linbux/Unix/Sendmail were you running?
What's in the email that sendmail is trying to deliver?
Who's it going to?
