   Did you compile in "SCSI support" and "SCSI generic support"?

Yep, both of those were checked "y" in make xconfig.

And I put the "ide-scsi" thing in my "append" string, as you can see from
this excerpt from the boot log:

Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=Linux ro root=30c hdd=ide-scsi, max_scsi_luns=1
