Can telnet port 80 but cannot ping!

Thanks for your helpful comments.
Actually, my plan has been to use ssh from the beggining.
I just needed to use telnet as a trouble shooting tool temporarily.
Now that I have got my ssh working I won't enable telnet.

   Please do not enable telnet on your system.  Some idiot will use
   it to give you a black eye.

   Red Hat generally has telnet disabled even if you do make the mistake
   of installing it.  Do a "man xinetd" to begin grappling with how to
   turn on telnet if you absolutely must.

   You may also need to rerun lokkit and punch a hole for telnet
   if you selected one of the firewalling options.


   Opening telnet and ftp are like dropping the soap in the wrong shower.

   Get a look at ssh instead.
