Activating on-motherboard (integrated) sound in Linux

I would look around the motherboard for the chip number and do a google
search.

Thanks for your chanlenging response.
I have got the I/O and IRQ for my on-board sound!

Can anyone give me some pointers for finding/loading
the necessary module for someone who has not done so before?
Any reference/reading for this task?

Ali,

If you want to waste a lot of time and energy...

Boot into the compaq diagnostic partition (assuming you did not overwrite
it) and look at the options for "known" hardware.  The I/O and IRQ of your
on-board hardware (if available) will come in handy if you have the guts to
look for a module and build/load it.  You may need to open the hood and
search for a chip number too.

My Deskpro has BIOS on disk, which sucks BTW.
