I can answer my own question ("we'll just have to wait and see"), but
I'll ask it anyway.

What's Red Hat going to do for their next distro?  Haven't they kind
of put themselves in a difficult position, by releasing 7.0 with gcc
2.96?  If they push something out the door to contain the new kernel,
which compiler are they going to use?  If they use 2.95, they'll be
binary incompatible with their own most recent release.  If they use
2.96, they'll be pulling the same blunder they did last time.

I guess I hope they revert to 2.95.  Of course I'd like to see gcc 3.0
soon, but I hope they don't rush it.  They look to be closing in on it
(see http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2001-01/msg00871.html), but I think it
would be particularly unfortunate if, say, Red Hat's marketing needs
began to drive the resolution of what should be purely technical
issues.  I'm not saying that this is the case, but I can't help
wondering.
