Thanks! After taking some calming breaths, I went ahead and gave it a shot.
Doing it manually, I got a different error when running make modules
(setting up ftp server as a module). Once I changed the config to just not
use ftp server, everything went fine.

Now to reboot into the new kernel and see what happens! ;-}
