I don't know if this may be related, but I've seen Sun Solaris systems 
totally lock up for several seconds while experiencing hard drive 
read/write problems.  After each freeze, an I/O error message was written 
to the console.  You might want to look for these types of errors 
somewhere and/or verify your hard drive's health.
