  This question is addressed in at least one LDP HowTo that I know of:

  and probably:

   The simple answer is usually to specify your display's resolution in
DPI so that the server picks the right fonts. (Section 2.2 of the
FDU-HowTo) I'm pretty sure XFree 4.x can figure this out by itself,
though.
   Other than that, it probably depends on your WM and desktop
environment.
