Unfortunately that tends to be true. I once worked with a software 
"engineer" who always found the most complicated way to solve a simple 
problem. He'd come up with some 100+ lines of code for an algorythm that 
could be solved with 3 easy lines of C code. He could never visualize and 
simplify. 
The whole underlying philosophy of Unix and C is simplicity and terseness. 
Unix commands are usually very simple (and terse). You want to make a 
command more complex, use pipes and multiple commands.
