Well, vi is preferable if you can find a workaround for the escape key.  Someone already pointed out that jkhl can be used for cursor movement, so that leaves the escape key to terminate insertion.  I did a bit of research and have a couple of ideas you could try.  I don't have your setup, so I can't verify them myself.

One of the references suggested that the DEC station used the F11 key.  I'd guess this would be a long shot, but it's worth a try.  Another long shot is Ctrl-[, but that probably grabbed by your terminal.  A third possibility would be the "Meta" key that apparently works in some situation, but I don't even know what that is; I'm just quoting a reference.

I think your best bet would be the .exrc file.  If I understand it correctly it allows you to remap keys.  The bugger would be making the file in the first place, but if you could write it elsewhere you should be able to FTP it to the Linux box.
