strange gethostsbyname error...

That's what log files are for. FWIW, it's a good ideal to always report as 
much relevant info on failures, especially on servers where you can't take 
it down or where the failure occurs after a long time. 

Also, bracketing the call by a sethostent() and endhostent() may also solve 
the problem.
